Child homelessness is an issue prevalent in American society. 1.3 million children in America (50% under the age of six) have been declared homeless. Homelessness is ‘an inadequate experience of connectedness with family and or community,’ (Dominic Mapstone,2011) which indicates that many of these homeless children have psychological issues. 20% of pre schoolers who are homeless have emotional issues which require professional care. There are 1.3 million children living on the streets of America and this has a massive effect on the health and upbringing of the children. This is seen in their health, which deteriorates at a rapid rate. Homeless children in America get sick on average twice as often as other children. They get twice as many ear infections, five times the number of stomach issues, four times as many asthma attacks and overall, two times as many hospitalisations. All these can lead to development issues which affect the future of these children dramatically. Living in the society which we do, we have the opportunity to help these children who do not have the chance to help themselves. We need to give a voice to these voiceless children. To help these children, please spread the word of child homelessness or donate at the link below: secure3.convio.net

Health Advocate, Inc. Makes Donation to Operation Smile
Plymouth Meeting, PA (PRWEB) August 22, 2011
Health Advocate, Inc., the nation?s leading healthcare assistance and advocacy company, made a $ 600 donation to Operation Smile, an organization whose cause is to help children with congenital facial deformities such as cleft lip or cleft palate. Money for the donation was raised through a corporate donation along with a “Summer Splash” dress down day, a weekday in which employees pay a dollar or more each to dress in casual clothes.
“Many kids who are affected by cleft lip or palate come from families who cannot afford expensive surgeries,” says Marty Rosen, cofounder and Executive Vice President of Health Advocate. ?We?re happy to support an organization like Operation Smile that provides those surgeries, and helps change a child?s life for the better.?
“Over 200,000 children each year are born with the condition, which makes not only eating and speaking difficult, but may make them feel embarrassed, or worse, shunned,” says Lauri Catena, National Director of Operation Smile. “This generous donation from Health Advocate will help us transform the lives of children and families in need.”
Health Advocate?s 21 million members across the country, many who suffer from a variety of conditions, are helped by the company everyday to find the most convenient and affordable care. Today, the company?s donation will help two children get the surgeries they need.

Women’s Health Specialists Urge Pregnant Women to Prepare Now for Hurricane Irene

Jensen Beach, FL (PRWEB) August 25, 2011
With hurricane Irene posing a threat to the Carolina?s and the Northeastern United States, Women?s Health Specialists says now is the time pregnant women and their significant others should take steps to be prepared for a hurricane and related dangers.
According to Dr. Megan Gray, MD, an ob-gyn at Women?s Health Specialists, hurricane season can be a stressful time for everyone, but especially for a pregnant woman. ?The more prepared you are the more comfortable and safe you will be should a hurricane or tropical storm threaten you now or in the future.?
The professionals at Women?s Health Specialists have posted a link on their website http://www.whsfl.com/news to a list of hurricane and disaster tips for pregnant women. Among the tips:
Medications
Prepare a current list of all prescriptions and prenatal vitamins you are taking. Put this list in sealable plastic bag then in a secure place among the belongings you plan to take with you if you leave your home.
Bring at least a two week supply of all medications with you if you choose to relocate or go to a shelter during a storm.
When possible, always bring medications in their original prescription bottle. In an emergency, an emergency decree allowing pharmacies to refill medications may be made, but you must have the original bottle.
Place your medications in a sealable plastic bag to keep them dry and protect the information on the label in case you need to obtain refills.
Call your Physician
Communicate with your health care provider?s office to let them know where you will be; if you plan to leave town bring a copy of your medical records including prenatal record, immunizations, and current medications with you.
Make sure that your health care provider has a current telephone number of where you will be staying.
If you had or are having complications in your pregnancy, check with your health care provider to discuss whether it is safe for you to leave prior to the storm or if it would be better for
Dr. Gray recommends pregnant women in the path of Hurricane Irene visit the Women?s Health Specialists website for a complete list of tips and precautions. ?One of the most critical times is after a hurricane or tropical storm has passed. Pregnant women should take extra precautions while clean up and storm recovery is underway. If you have any concerns over your health or that of your unborn child, you should contact your physician right away.?

Sanford Health Announces Clinic in Ghana, Africa

Fargo, ND and Sioux Falls, SD (PRWEB) August 21, 2011
As a result of a rigorous selection process, Sanford Health officially announced plans today to open a Sanford Clinic in Cape Coast, Ghana, Africa. Through conversations with various World Health Organizations, Ghana has been emphasized as an area of need and opportunity for improved health care services. Sanford will take responsibility for the operations of an existing primary care clinic in Cape Coast, Ghana currently lead by two physicians who are treating 800 patients a week.
This location will serve as the hub for several other general health care clinics throughout Ghana. The clinic will provide general health care services to area children and adults and includes the diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses in the region, especially malaria, diarrhea and respiratory health issues. These services will be provided by physicians, nurses and other community health professionals. Ghana?s consistent government and growing economy will allow Sanford to build a model of permanent health infrastructure that can then be parlayed into projects in other parts of the African continent. The first two additional clinics will be in Mankessim, Ghana and Kojokrom, Ghana.
?The venture in Ghana is the beginning of what we hope to be a major change in health care services in Africa,? stated Dave Link, Sanford Health senior executive vice president. ?Through a ?hub and spoke? model we hope to make an immediate impact on health care in the country and beyond.?
Sanford has partnered with Kojo Benjamin Taylor, a Ghana native and business entrepreneur from Minneapolis/St. Paul to gain local expertise on the project. Mr. Taylor has now been contracted by Sanford Health and will lead Sanford?s efforts to develop permanent health care infrastructure in Ghana and more broadly in Africa.
?In the developing nation of Ghana, health care is supported by the government in urban areas,? said Taylor. ?However, much of the population and need is in rural areas where there is a lack of permanent health care infrastructure. In many cases children and families are asked to travel two to four hours to receive basic health care services.?
In 2007, South Dakota businessman and philanthropist Denny Sanford set a standard in health care philanthropy with an unprecedented gift of $ 400 million to Sanford Health. Sanford Health announced that his gift would fund several initiatives including establishing a network of Sanford Clinics around the world in communities seeking to expand access to care to those who need it.
The Sanford Clinic in Ghana is one of seven clinics announced by Sanford as part of the initiatives outlined after a $ 400 million donation from Denny Sanford in 2007. Sanford Children?s has opened pediatric clinics in Duncan, OK and Oceanside, CA. Clinics in Klamath Falls, OR and West Dublin, Ireland are underway. Sanford has also announced plans to open clinics in Carmiel, Israel and the Baja area, Mexico.

Sperm Count May be Good Predictor of Men?s Overall Health, from the Harvard Men?s Health Watch

(PRWEB) August 10, 2011
Is poor semen quality a new longevity risk factor? Normally, a doctor looking for a snapshot of a patient?s health will ask about smoking, drinking, diet, and exercise and then measure cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight or waist size. These facts and numbers already enable doctors to predict long-term health and longevity, but scientists are always looking for additional measurements that can predict survival. According to an article in the August 2011 Harvard Men?s Health Watch, new Danish research may have pinpointed an unlikely health predictor, at least for men: semen quality.
Between 1963 and 2001, the Copenhagen Sperm Analysis Laboratory performed semen analyses on 51,543 men, most of whom were referred because they or their partners had concerns about fertility. The results showed a clear link between semen quality and the rate of death. As the number of sperm increased up to a threshold of 40 million per milliliter of semen, the mortality rate declined steadily; the men with the highest sperm counts enjoyed a mortality rate 43% lower than the men with the lowest counts.
The apparent protective effect of high semen quality extended to a broad range of diseases, suggesting that specific lifestyle factors do not explain the findings. Instead, the Danish scientists postulate that semen quality may be a reliable biomarker of overall health and life expectancy.
Many insurance companies ask men to have physical exams and submit blood and urine samples before they issue life insurance. Will they now ask for semen samples as well? Not anytime soon.
More research is needed to confirm a link between semen quality and life expectancy. Although the Danish study is large and is based on 38 years of mortality data, additional research should include information about factors that may affect both sperm quality and life expectancy, including age, exposure to insecticides and toxins, tobacco and alcohol use, obesity, and hormone levels.
If nothing else, the Danish research is likely to spur new studies of semen quality, health, and survival. It?s an interesting and important area in its own right, and it may have broader implications.
The Danish investigation examined only individual mortality rates, which is no small issue. But since some studies raise the possibility that semen quality has declined over time, the research may have implications beyond the life expectancy of an individual man.

The same scenes are repeated in cities and town across the nation from late August through the end of September. Groups of students convene in classrooms to get to work after a fun, hot summer. Often these students bring something more then pencils and books. All too often they carry the germs and viruses that lead to colds, the flu, strep throat and ear infections. After learning how to share at school, students carry contagions home, causing further cycling among households and, often, on to the workplace. It’s an endless rotation only a thorough knowledge of health and wellness can cure.
This year brings a special cause for concern. Health officials remain very worried that bird flu is poised to make a wholesale jump to humans. Without an effective vaccine, the virus could cause a widespread pandemic ? a generalized and geographically outbreak affecting millions — and exact a high death toll among Americans before it is contained.
While a bird flu vaccine may be developed, it would be folly to take too much comfort. Flu viruses tend to mutate and mutate quickly. Vaccinating for the bird flu may give people a false sense of comfort.

Wellness Resources Brings the Latest Prenatal Health News
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) August 24, 2011
Byron J. Richards, Founder of Wellness Resources, relays the most recent, ground-breaking research regarding prenatal health and the resulting health of newborns and children. Richards is also pleased to announce the recent launch of partner Mothers for Wellness Foundation (MFWF), a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and wellness of mothers and children around the world.
In his latest articles, he explains the importance of breast feeding, consuming optimal omega 3 fish oils and B vitamins, and reducing inflammation during pregnancy. Furthermore, he reveals how these prenatal practices shape the immediate and long-term health of children. In his article entitled, ?Breast Feeding Can Prevent Celiac Disease,? Richards explains that ?breast feeding, as compared to bottle feeding, is far superior in facilitating proper development of the bacterial types in the digestive tract. In fact, the failure to breastfeed can lead to an imbalance of bacteria that encourages highly inflammatory digestive problems and consequent development of Celiac disease.?
Byron J. Richards believes by educating and equipping mothers with the necessary tools they may offer their children the greatest potential for a healthy life. This is precisely what Mothers for Wellness Foundation and its founder, Mary Guignon Richards, intend to accomplish. Mary Guignon Richards states, ?My lifelong mission, and reason for founding MFWF, is to educate mothers about natural health and wellness, helping them to become confident, empowered advocates and directors of their own health and the health of their unborn children.? Moreover, through spreading this knowledge and sense of empowerment between mothers, Mary believes we can make a real difference in the overall wellness of our world.
