i do 200 crunches a day it DOES work! i have a six pack you can see the lining (6 yes its nasty for a girl) but i still need to get rid of the inch of fat on my belly for ppl to see my abs
achieving abdominal muscle- all you have to do is drink water at least half a gallon a day, cardio (I suggest to do it as early as possible, because during the rest of the day your body will burn even more calories)and implement isotonic/isometric type of ab exercises, high reps in any ab exercise could hurt you if your not properly stretching, also a cooldown after each workout, lifting weights and building muscle throughout the body will further enhance your chances because it helps burn fat.
